Dear Nestmaker,

I am a bit of a bookworm who is trying to become more of a nester now that my husband and I just purchased an old home in Weston, Connecticut. Do you have any suggestions for books about interiors that have nice photos but are also a really good read?

Dear Bookworm,

Artisan Books recently published a book by Stafford Cliff called Home- 50 Tastemakers Describe What it is, Where it is, What it means, which is an excellent resource for browsing a variety of different decorating styles. It provides an intimate sneak peak into the lives and living rooms of 50 different personalities. The book includes personal essays from people like fashion designer Paul Smith, actress Miranda Richardson and architect Michael Graves, which accompany photos of their homes. From modern and slick to vintage and homey, this book covers a wide range of spaces as well as the small personal touches that breathe life into a room.

Dear Nestmaker,

I am a new mom who would like to buy some stylish but eco-friendly furniture for my daughter's nursery. I would like some things that she can grow into. Suggestions? Is it possible to have green furniture that looks great too?

Dear Rose-Colored Glasses,

Montana-based Celery furniture has designed a smart line of children's furniture which includes a crib, changing table, rocking chair and rocking pony (among other things) that can be easily assembled using simple joinery and a mallet (both provided). Celery furniture respects the environment by making eco-friendly furniture is safe for your children. The furniture components use bamboo, non-toxic adhesives, Low-VOC finishes and formaldehyde-free fiberboard. That's as green as it gets without having it actually made of celery! www.celeryfurniture.com.

Dear Nestmaker,

I have been searching for a couple of hanging lights for my kitchen but keep seeing the same old boring stuff. I also don't want anything heavy because my kitchen is small. Can you suggest something new and different that is functional and elegant but that will also lighten up the space?

Dear Lighten up,

How about using Juliska pendant lights for your kitchen? Each pendant is mouth blown in the Cezch Republic and they use special techniques for the various designs, all of which are applied by hand. Check out their site at www.juliska.com.

Dear Nestmaker,

I realize that this question isn’t really about decoration or design so please forgive me. I stumbled across an image of you in a Bark Exhibition catalog where photos of designers and their dogs were being auctioned off for charity. I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful leash and collar on your dog Dolby. Can you tell me where I can find this? I’ve searched high and low and want to purchase one for Ellie, my 2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Dear Lighten up,

Thanks for the inquiry. The leash and collar worn by Dolby in the photos are from www.rhadicollection.com. They sell one-of-a-kind beaded leather collars and leads that are made by Maasai tribeswomen in Kenya. The tribeswomen cut out shapes from cow hides and intricately bead more than 2,000 beads together and sew them individually onto the hides, creating unique and beautiful dog collars and leads. The hand stitched leather band fastens to a solid brass buckle. And how perfect is it that your Rhodesian Ridgeback (a native of South Africa) will be wearing a stunning African lead and collar!

Dear Nestmaker,

My husband keeps laughing at me because I have been carrying around my favorite blue silk blouse in my purse for the last two weeks. I love the color and I think that I'd like to decorate my living room around the color (and maybe the pattern). Every time we go shopping for paint or furniture I pull it out! Am I as crazy as my husband thinks I am or do people actually decorate using their favorite clothes for inspiration?

Dear Inspired,

There is no rhyme or reason as to what we are inspired by when it comes to decorating our nests. This red and white dining room was inspired by my favorite red and white gingham dress (this photo was taken when I was 4 years old).

While I never had he opportunity to carry it around in my purse, almost 40 years later this dining room continues to be one of my favorite rooms and these same colors and classic check pattern are still in style. Tell your husband that if he wants to laugh at anyone he can laugh at me instead.

Dear Nestmaker,

I have been looking for something decorative for my dining room but can’t seem to find the right thing! My space is very modern and the walls are white. I want something glass to put on the credenza and on the mantel. I’ve been looking for accessories that are elegant but I also really want to add some of color. Can you suggest something?

Dear Rose-Colored Glasses,

Glassware is the glamorous and yes, practical solution to your dining room dilemma. When used in the right way, the mix of candlelight and glass sconces or a chandelier can create wonderful reflections and fantastic sparkle. A jewel-toned handmade decanter from Joe Cariati is the place to begin your collection. These spectacularly-shaped yet practical pourers pop with color (aqua, apricot, cranberry, tea, amber or olive, depending on the shape and size) and are sure to elicit oohs from all of your dinner guests.

Dear Nestmaker,

I am redecorating my daughter Dylan’s bedroom- She is 7 years old and obsessed with all things girly and pink. We live in a rental apartment and I don’t want to paint the walls because I’ll have to paint them back again to white if we move. Is there any way to add pink to her walls without paint (or permanent damage). I want to make my daughter happy but I also want to get my security deposit back.

Dear Tickled Pink,

Vinyl decals in whimsical patterns are the perfect way to provide plenty of pink to walls and windows without the pesky permanence. We love Sofia Antonovich’s Les Invasions Ephemeres line of wall decals: pink Eiffel Towers and butterflies, flowers, animals and many others. Your daughter will love being able to choose where to stick the decals and you’ll love how they’re a snap to keep clean (just a quick wash and wipe). And above all, they won’t leave a permanent sticky residue that will harm the walls. Something you and your landlord will both be tickled pink to hear.
